Frequently asked questions
Should I use UUID v4 or v7?
v4 is fully random and the most common. v7 starts with a timestamp, so new IDs sort after older ones, which keeps database indexes fast. Both are defined in RFC 9562.
Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
In practice, no. A v4 UUID has 122 random bits; you would need to generate billions per second for many years before a collision became likely.
Is a UUID the same as a GUID?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit identifier. Use the braces option for the '{…}' style some Windows tools expect.
