How to sign a PDF without printing it

Add your signature to a contract, form or letter on your phone or computer in under a minute, with no printer, scanner or account.

· 1 min read

Printing a document, signing it with a pen, then scanning it back in is slow and makes the file look worse. You can sign a PDF directly on your screen and send it back in a minute.

Sign a PDF in your browser

  1. Open the PDF. It stays on your device; nothing is uploaded.
  2. Create your signature in one of three ways:
    • Draw it with your finger, stylus or mouse.
    • Type your name and pick a handwriting style.
    • Upload a photo of your handwritten signature.
  3. Place it. Tap Place signature, then tap where it should go. Drag to move it and pull the corner to resize.
  4. Add the date with one tap if the document asks for it.
  5. Download the signed PDF.

Fill in the form first

If the PDF has fields to complete, like your name, address and checkboxes, fill them in with PDF Forms before signing. Then sign the finished document.

Lock it so it can't be edited

After signing, run the document through Flatten PDF. Flattening merges form fields and annotations into the page, so the values and your signature can't be edited or removed in a PDF reader.

Is an electronic signature legally binding?

In many countries, including the US (ESIGN Act), the EU (eIDAS) and the UK, an electronic signature is generally valid for everyday agreements such as rental contracts, consent forms and invoices. Some documents still need a handwritten signature, a witness or a qualified digital certificate, for example wills, some property transfers and court documents. When in doubt, ask the person or organization who sent you the document what they accept.

Tips

  • Sign in dark blue or black so it's clearly visible when printed.
  • Keep a copy of the unsigned original.
  • Sign on a large screen or with a stylus for the smoothest strokes.
